Smush Pro is a paid image optimization edition for WordPress. It handles images as they are uploaded, lets you process existing media, and includes options for how images load and are delivered.
Process images across your site
Enable automatic optimization to process new uploads. For images already in the media library, use bulk optimization or compress individual entries. Directory Smush also processes images stored outside the library, including files in theme folders, add-on directories, and other server directories.
Balance file size and image quality
Choose lossless or lossy compression to suit your needs. Smush Pro works with full-size image compression for files up to 256 MB. By default, Smush compresses resized versions without deleting originals.
Manage loading and image formats
Lazy loading defers images until they are needed, which can help pages with many images load more efficiently. Smush Pro also supports image preloading. It converts images to WebP and AVIF and serves those formats to supported browsers.
Fit images to their display space
Dynamic resizing adapts images to fit their containers, regardless of their original dimensions. Smush can also add missing width and height attributes. These capabilities help address PageSpeed recommendations for image sizing and explicit dimensions, and can reduce layout shifts.
Deliver images through a global CDN
The image CDN delivers images through servers around the world, with delivery based on visitor location to help reduce latency. Smush Pro lists 119 global CDN servers and up to 500 GB of bandwidth.
Use with an existing WordPress setup
Smush is designed to work with WordPress themes, page builders, and extensions, including Gutenberg, Elementor, WPBakery, and WooCommerce. Install and activate the plugin, then enable the options that fit your site. Use bulk optimization for existing library images and Directory Smush for images stored elsewhere on the server.
