Choose the map setup for your page

The free Gmap Block embeds a Google map for one location without an API key. Gmap Block Pro uses the Google Maps JavaScript API for interactive capabilities, so it requires a Google Maps API key.

Pro works in posts, pages, templates, template parts, and patterns. You can use it for branch directories, venue details, or other pages where visitors need to explore places on a map.

Check the API key if a map is blank

Open Settings → Gmap Block and choose Test this key. The result reports whether Google accepted the key and whether the Places API (New) responded. Use that information to check which Google API still needs to be enabled.

The extension also includes guidance for creating an API key.

Connect locations with map controls

• Add multiple locations to one map, each with its own details.
• Choose custom pin colours or use an SVG icon for markers.
• Attach an information window to a marker.
• Show location cards that pan and zoom the map to the selected location.
• Display driving directions between two points.

For example, a branch directory can let visitors select an office from a card, move the map to that location, and view more details in its marker information window.

Adjust map style and scrolling

Map styling options include dark mode, muted palettes, and hidden points of interest. An interaction setting can stop the map from taking over page scrolling, so visitors can continue moving through the page without triggering map movement.

For geographic data that suits a various format, Pro also includes an SVG world map that you can colour with your own data.

Set up a Pro map

1. Install and activate Gmap Block Pro.
2. Prepare a Google Maps API key for the Pro features.
3. Open the Gmap Block options and select Test this key to check the configuration.
4. Add the Gmap Block to a post, page, template, template part, or pattern.
5. Set up the locations, markers, information windows, styling, and other map controls you need.
6. Preview and publish the content.
