Featured Image from URL Pro extends FIFU for WordPress sites that use images and video hosted outside the Media Library. FIFU Free works with remote featured images and main WooCommerce product images. Pro adds featured video and audio, sliders, multiple-image galleries, variation media and additional automation and integrations. Remote originals can remain at their source; Pro can also download supported images to the Media Library when local copies are needed.

Assign remote media to content

Use supported media with posts, pages, custom post types, WooCommerce products and categories, and supported taxonomy terms. For an external image, use a direct URL that is publicly accessible and enables external display. Image loading depends on the source host, file size, caching and CDN options.

Pro can assign featured media from post content, a title-based image search, a web page URL, a custom field or a website screenshot. It also supports ASIN-based product image assignment and automatic product category images. Which settings apply depends on the content type and integration.

Featured video, audio and sliders

Set a supported video as featured media instead of a static image. Supported sources include YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Cloudflare Stream, Bunny Stream, VideoPress, Google Drive and other providers, as well as local Media Library videos and remote video files. Featured audio supports services such as Spotify and SoundCloud. Provider and browser playback restrictions still apply.

Video presentation options include thumbnails, play buttons, player controls and minimum width. Autoplay, hover playback, looping and mute are available for supported sources. Remote videos need a remote featured image for their thumbnail; for a video in the Media Library, select a frame and save it as the thumbnail. Compatible featured videos can also have Watch Later or Queue buttons. Featured sliders can replace a single featured image, with controls for supported slider displays.

WooCommerce galleries and variations

Create product image galleries from multiple external URLs and include videos in product galleries. Pro also provides the FIFU product gallery, remote main images for product variations, and galleries assigned to individual variations. Other store tools include product image lightbox and zoom support, Quick Buy on compatible shop pages, product images in order emails, and the option to download supported remote images to the Media Library.

Pro can work with product image data from ASINs and supported imports. Automatic category image assignment is also available. Gallery and variation capabilities depend on the compatible WooCommerce process being used.

Imports, integrations and social sharing

Import and export workflows include WP All Import, WP All Export, WooCommerce product CSV imports and WebToffee product import and export. Supported fields depend on each extension's configuration. Pro also includes REST API endpoints for FIFU URL information and supported media operations, plus WP-CLI integration for command-line settings and featured image management.

Other supported integrations include Elementor featured video widgets, Gravity Forms video and slider fields, Dokan product gallery fields, bbPress and BuddyBoss Platform. Automatic social sharing supports configured Facebook, Instagram and X workflows. Compatibility options also cover tools such as WP Automatic and AAWP.

Image delivery and developer functions

FIFU CDN can deliver remote images with responsive sizes where available. FIFU Cloud is a separate optional service for cloud storage and image delivery. It can provide optimized thumbnails, automatic upload and deletion scheduling, and hotlink protection.

Pro's PHP functions can set featured videos and sliders, product image and video lists, and product category videos. These functions support custom workflows that pass media URLs into WordPress content or product entries.

First use and edge cases

Install and activate the extension in WordPress, configure its settings, then add a valid image or video URL to the relevant post, page, taxonomy term or product. Preview the result and check that the source permits external display. If an image does not load, check its URL and the source site's hotlink settings. If FIFU is removed, themes or extensions that rely on it to display remote featured images may no longer display them. Review the metadata cleanup options in the settings if you want to remove FIFU-generated data.
