Choose how styles and scripts load
Autoptimize can aggregate, minify and cache CSS and JavaScript, and minify HTML. CSS goes in the page head by default; critical CSS can be inlined while the aggregated full stylesheet is deferred. JavaScript can be moved and deferred to the footer. The plugin can also optimize Google Fonts, handle asynchronous non-aggregated JavaScript, lazy-load images and remove WordPress core emoji code.
Aggregation is configurable and is off by default on new installations. When enabled, styles move to the page head and scripts to the footer. You can turn aggregation off and keep minification on. HTTP/2 reduces the impact of multiple requests, though minification or aggregation may still suit a particular website. The right combination depends on the site, so configure the settings, check the pages, then adjust and test again.
Extend the setup with Pro features
- Page caching: add page caching to the asset optimization process.
- Image optimization: optimize and lazy-load images, with support for WebP and AVIF. The source images need to be publicly reachable by the optimization service; access restrictions such as a firewall, password protection or hotlink prevention can interfere.
- CDN support: serve Autoptimize-generated CSS and JavaScript through a configured CDN. Uploaded images use a separate WordPress upload path setting, which applies to images uploaded after the change.
- Automatic critical CSS: apply critical CSS rules to support non-render-blocking delivery.
- Booster options: add further performance settings beyond the core controls.
Test settings in the site’s context
Review the main settings and enable the options that fit the site. After changing aggregation, deferral, critical CSS, image or font settings, check the affected pages. Autoptimize Pro can also complement another page caching plugin, so account for the site’s existing cache setup when testing.
An extensive API is available for further customization. Help is available through the WordPress support forum; confirmed code bugs can be reported on GitHub. Premium support and web performance optimization services are also offered.
Remove Autoptimize cleanly
Disable Autoptimize before removing it. Then clear any remaining page cache that may contain pages referencing its optimized CSS or JavaScript.
