WordPress plugin
Optimus HQ WordPress Image Optimizer
During an upload, Optimus sends the image to its server for processing, then saves the returned, optimized version in the WordPress media library. Processing runs in the background and includes the thumbnails WordPress generates. The media library shows the compression gain for each file as a percentage, and no code adjustments are needed.
Image processing in WordPress
During an upload, Optimus sends the image to its server for processing, then saves the returned, optimized version in the WordPress media library. Processing runs in the background and includes the thumbnails WordPress generates. The media library shows the compression gain for each file as a percentage, and no code adjustments are needed.
Reductions of up to 70 percent are possible, depending on the image and format. Optimus describes its compression technology as maintaining image quality. It also creates progressive JPEGs and removes image information that is not needed to show the file.
HQ editions and image options
Optimus HQ is the premium edition described for personal projects. Optimus HQ PRO is described as the professional solution for customer websites. Both are paid editions with expanded functionality beyond the free base version, which has limitations such as a maximum file size of 100 KB.
Optimus HQ works with optional HTTPS image transfer and optional conversion to WebP. The product description recommends WordPress Cache Enabler to integrate converted WebP images. You can also select to retain EXIF and IPTC metadata, including author and copyright information. Keeping that data may reduce the compression gain.
Existing media and compatibility
Bulk optimization can process existing images. Optimus also supports WooCommerce and WordPress multisite. Its background workflow covers thumbnails commonly used by WordPress themes, as well as the uploaded image.
Transfer and image formats
After processing and transfer, the Optimus server immediately deletes temporarily stored documents. The product description states that files are not stored and that the servers are located in Germany.
For photographs, the description recommends JPEG; PNG is identified as suitable for illustrations. It notes that JPEG files are generally quicker to reduce.
Installation requirements
Install the Optimus edition in WordPress and allow outbound connections so images can be sent for processing. Once active, the plugin optimizes uploads and saves the returned versions in the media library. Use bulk optimization for existing images. The listed requirements are PHP 5.6 or later and WordPress 4.6 or later.
