The EqualWeb WordPress add-on adds an accessibility widget to public pages and PDF utilities to the WordPress admin. The widget uses an installation code from an EqualWeb account and comes with the account plan. PDF checks are free and require no account; optional AI remediation requires an account and credits.

Set up the visitor widget

Paste your installation code in the Accessibility Widget tab. The add-on loads the widget on public pages after the page renders, using the integrity hash in your code. Visitors can choose from the widget menu in its available languages.

Design the accessibility button in WordPress by choosing its side, vertical position, size, colors, icon or short text label, shape, and outline. The button designer includes 14 icons, five shapes, a live preview, and a contrast readout. Set the menu language to follow the page language or choose an available widget language.

You can use your own button with the [equalweb_button text="Accessibility"] shortcode. “Check on your site” verifies that the widget appears on your pages and warns if it loads more than once. You can also conceal it from logged-in administrators while editing. With an EqualWeb API key saved in Settings, the widget tab can check for an update and apply it in one click while keeping your button design.

Check PDF accessibility

From the Documents tab, execute a free check against the PDF/UA standard. Each scan runs 80 automated checks and provides a score from 0 to 100, a detailed report, and a shareable online report. Findings cover tagging, reading order, alternate text, title, language, tables, headings, forms, and contrast. The plugin also cites WCAG 2.2, Section 508, the ADA, and EN 301 549.

PDF tools include search, status filters, score sorting, pagination, bulk checks, an analytics dashboard, automatic document classification, and role-based permissions. Administrators can choose who may view documents, run checks, spend remediation credits, or replace files. The interface supports light and dark themes and is in English.

Remediate documents with credits

AI remediation is optional. Connect an EqualWeb account and API key in Settings, then use credits to remediate PDFs, including scans, or Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files. The service OCRs scanned documents and returns a tagged, PDF/UA-conformant PDF. It adds image alternate text, rebuilds heading hierarchy and reading order, tags lists, links, references, and tables, and sets the document language and title.

Each document can be up to 100 MB and 200 pages. The plugin shows before-and-after accessibility scores and preserves the original structure, layout, and visual design. You can replace the original at the same URL, with a backup available for one-click restoration, save the result as a new file, or download it. Files submitted for remediation are processed in EqualWeb’s secured cloud, which is certified to ISO 27001.

Install and check your site

Install and activate the plugin from the WordPress admin, then open EqualWeb. For the widget, copy the installation code from your EqualWeb account, paste it in the Accessibility Widget tab, and save. To check PDFs, open a Documents tab and run a free check. The site registers for free checks when an administrator first opens a PDF tab.

Free-check registration requires a site reachable over HTTPS and a verification page that answers anonymous requests directly, without a login, redirect, firewall rule, or page cache. If registration fails, the plugin shows the reason and a Try again option. For remediation, connect your account and API key in Settings. The key is encrypted in the site database and used only for server-side requests.
