Set up the glossary
With CM Tooltip Glossary Premium, create an entry by using the term as its title and its definition as the content. The add-on can recognize terms in posts and pages, link them to dedicated definition pages, and display a tooltip when visitors hover over a linked term. An alphabetical index gives visitors another way to browse entries.
Definitions can include structured content, pictures and files. The base add-on offers list and tile index layouts, and existing excerpts can supply tooltip text. Central settings control where tooltips appear across pages, posts and the homepage. UTF-8 support handles international characters.
Choose features by edition
The base plugin supports up to 500 terms and includes individual term pages, automatic links, tooltips, an index and a guided setup wizard. Paid editions add management and presentation settings, with availability depending on the edition.
- Pro: Removes the base version's 500-term limit and adds pagination, CSV import and export, permalink controls, custom post type support and Advanced Custom Fields integration. Pro also supports synonyms, variations, abbreviations, multisite and WPML.
- Pro+: Adds more index templates, custom term layouts, multiple glossary categories, alternative meanings, advanced search, Google Translate and Merriam-Webster integrations.
- Ecommerce: Adds tools such as AI term discovery and definition generation with ChatGPT or Gemini, audio and video tooltips, Wikipedia and Wiktionary integrations, Amazon product recommendations and WooCommerce compatibility.
Control display and parsing
Use the central settings to select where tooltips appear and how glossary terms are displayed. Add [cm_tooltip_parse] when specific content should be processed. To exclude a paragraph from parsing, wrap it in [glossary_exclude] and [/glossary_exclude].
Install and publish
Install the CM Tooltip Glossary base plugin in WordPress, then add the applicable paid edition. Use the setup wizard to configure the essentials, create or import terms, and adjust glossary and tooltip settings. Review permalink, index and display options before publishing. Add the parsing shortcode where specific content needs it.
