Protection for files and the uploads directory
Protect Uploads Pro extends WordPress media protection at two levels. Individual files can be password-protected, while directory controls address browsing of the WordPress uploads folder.
To protect the directory, the add-on can add an index.php file at its root or configure an .htaccess response that returns a 403 Forbidden error. The .htaccess option may be disabled depending on server options. Built-in Site Health checks report whether the directory is protected from browsing, identify the server in use and flag risky file types in the uploads folder.
Access controls for individual media
Edit a media item in the Media Library to open its Password Protection section. Assign one or more passwords to a file and add custom labels to distinguish audiences or sharing contexts. Password protection supports pictures, PDFs, videos and documents. Access logging entries activity for password-protected files, including IP addresses and user agents.
Pro utilities for images and downloads
The Pro edition adds controls for watermarking images and managing downloads. Set watermark text, position, opacity and font size before applying available watermark operations, including bulk operations.
- Expiring download links: Links are intended to remain available for a limited period.
- Role-based access: Restrict access according to user roles, with server-level enforcement.
- Hotlink protection: Help control direct use of media from other locations.
- Download analytics: Review information about downloads.
- Protected Download block: Add protected downloads within WordPress content using the dedicated block.
Set up the add-on
Add Protect Uploads Pro to a WordPress installation and activate it. Open Settings > Media > Protect Uploads, review the directory and media access options, and enable the controls the site needs. Then configure individual files in the Media Library. For images, choose the watermark settings before applying the available operations. The interface is available in English, Français, Español and Italian.
