In Gutenberg, use the Document block. In the classic editor, choose Add Document. An optional download link can appear below the embedded file.
Choose a source and viewer
Supported cloud sources include Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Box.com. Viewer choices include Google Docs Viewer and Microsoft Office Online; PDFs can also use the browser-native viewer. PLUS adds Google Drive, OneDrive, and Box.com viewing settings. Dropbox is a supported source, though it is not listed among the added viewer options. The available viewer depends on the document and its source.
- Google Drive Viewer for documents hosted with Google Drive.
- One Drive Viewer for documents hosted in OneDrive.
- Box.com Viewer for documents hosted with Box.com.
Supported formats
- Word: DOC, DOCX, DOCM, DOTM, DOTX
- Excel: XLS, XLSX, XLSB, XLSM
- PowerPoint: PPT, PPTX, PPSX, PPS, PPTM, POTM, PPAM, POTX, PPSM
Access settings depend on the service
Privacy options come from supported cloud services and their access settings. For Box.com documents, the described security options include a password and disabling the download button. Other listed options include removing download access, adding passwords, restricting views, and embedding larger files when supported by the cloud service.
Viewer limits affect which files you can embed
Files must be available online. The viewers do not support local hosts, intranets, or files in password-protected environments. Google Docs Viewer works with files up to 8 MB, and Microsoft Office Online supports files up to 10 MB, according to the supplied information. Embedded documents do not play video or audio and do not display document animations or transitions. Default viewer buttons and other capabilities generally cannot be removed or changed.
The mobile-ready, cross-browser-compatible viewers are designed for use across different devices and browsers. Use the extension for reports, forms, brochures, manuals, and other office documents that you want to show on a WordPress site.
