Set viewing and editing rules for WordPress content

PublishPress Permissions Pro lets you control who can read or edit posts, pages, taxonomy terms, media files, and custom post types. Assign permissions to roles, individual visitors, or groups. Each supported content entry can have its own viewing and editing rules, and you can hide other users’ posts in the WordPress admin area from people who cannot edit them.

Media Library settings control who can view, list, or edit pictures and documents. Rules can account for whether a file is attached to a post the visitor can read or edit. For example, you can limit users to their own uploads or allow access to other users’ files attached to posts they can access. With Pro, you can also block direct public access to file URLs so access depends on permission to a post that includes the file.

Use groups to manage audiences

Custom user groups let you apply permissions to a defined audience without setting them separately for every person. The plugin includes groups for logged-in and logged-out users, and you can make additional groups for your site. Permissions can allow or block access for a role, user, or group.

The optional Content Visibility module uses the [pp_restrict] shortcode to display or hide sections based on login status, roles, capabilities, usernames, or Permission Groups. By default, all selected conditions must be met. Set relation="any" when any one condition should grant access. Enable Content Visibility under Permissions > Settings > Features, then view and copy shortcode examples under Permissions > Settings > Shortcodes.

Pro tools for restricted and personal content

  • Restricted-content teasers: Show public teaser text before private content. If you display a login form, its redirect can return visitors to the content they requested.
  • Personal content for users: Automatically create individual posts, pages, WooCommerce products, or another post type defined on your site, giving each user an item to edit or read.
  • Custom publishing statuses: Add process statuses beyond Draft, Pending Review, and Published. Each status can have its own capability requirements.
  • Custom visibility statuses: Create settings such as Premium for paying members or Staff for people who run the site.
  • Editorial and Visibility Circles: Limit editing or viewing to content authored by users in the same group.

Connect permissions to your existing workflow

PublishPress Permissions Pro integrates with BuddyPress, bbPress, WPML, and Relevanssi for permission workflows involving those extensions. For example, permissions can follow translated content in WPML, and Relevanssi search results can reflect content visibility.

Install the extension in WordPress and configure permissions in its settings and the permission boxes for supported content. You can start with user groups and viewing rules, then add editing permissions, visibility conditions, statuses, teasers, or circles as needed.
